Wisport,
Cycling Series for the Normally Obsessed

Some of the country's best bicycling is found on the secondary highways and county roads of Wisconsin, so it is only natural that the state has been the home of Wisport, a unique series of citizen's road races and time trials, for the past 19 years.road race

The road races and time trials in the Wisport Series are located in various communities throughout the state and are all OPEN Events.   The events are professionally timed, and feature awards in each of the Wisport age group categories shown below.   The events are organized and conducted by various local civic organizations and clubs, and are used to raise funds for charitable causes.   Entry fees vary in amount and may include family and pre-registration discounts.   Prize drawings, refreshments and event memorabilia such as t-shirts, shorts, socks or caps are often included in the fees.

As a Wisport member, you will have the additional benefit of participating in a number of season-long points competitions, the results of which are updated each week on the Wisport website.   Wisport also conducts members only drawings for many cycling related items after the races.

At the end of the racing season, Wisport holds a year-end ride and awards party.   Members enjoy a meal, trophy presentations and lots of prize drawings at this popular event.   You must be present to win at all Wisport drawings.

Wisport provides a venue for members to strive for personal goals, and enjoy friendly, family oriented events.   The Wisport scoring system allows riders of all ages and abilities to compete in a single combined event.   Wisport is self- governing, and the opinions of all its members are very important!

Series Guidelines

1.   Approved helmets must be worn in all events.

2.   No aero bars except in time trials.

3.   Applicant's age on July 1 determines racing age category for Wisport points.

4.   You can join Wisport at any time, but you are strongly encouraged to sign up prior to the beginning of the season calendar, or at the Wisport Friendly Century or less/clinic in Willard.

You can greatly assist the prompt calculation of points by signing up by mail, rather than in person, at an event.   Signing up for Wisport membership on race day may not be possible, and doing so may result in the delay of scoring.

Application forms are available in the printed Wisport Handbook, as well as from this website.   Your mailed application should reach Wisport prior to the first event in which you intend to participate.

5.   Most Wisport events are located in Wisconsin, but Wisport is open to anyone who wants to race, no matter where you reside.

Athena Category: $10.00 with Road Series membership.

8.   Scoring system for the road race series and time trial series: Wisport's cumulative point scoring system emphasizes participation.   Points are given to everyone finishing, based on how they finished within their age category.   The running total is maintained during the season for each member.   Year end awards are given out for each age category, based on total points received for your 7 best race events (using a maximum of 3 time trials) in the regular series events, and the 6 best time trial events in the time trial series.

Overall total series points awards (male and female) are based on a total of all (age category) Road Race Series points in all events completed.

In the case of ties in any Wisport points competition, a computer generated average percentile score will be used to determine placing.

There are three events on the 2009 calendar that do not offer Wisport points.   These are
The Rock Falls Time Trial Clinic
The Badger State Games Road Race and Time Trial
Wisport Worlds Championships Road Race and Time Trial

9.   Team Points Challenge: The top five individual age group scores from each team are totaled for each race.   These totals are accumulated for Team Points Challenge awards at the end of the year.

10.   Tandem scoring: For scoring purposes tandems are considered to be one entry.   As a result, they receive one score in the Tandem Category.   Two members who wish to register as age group (single bike) riders, but who also wish to compete in the Tandem Series at certain events, may do so by taking advantage of the substantial discount for adding the tandem membership.   Riders who participate in an event on a tandem, but who are not enrolled in the Tandem Series, will receive no points.

11.   Optional race distances.   Members may elect to race a different length race course when this option is offered by a race organizer.   Wisport will treat each distance as a separate event for all points and standings.

In some cases, a race organizer may offer different distance options with restrictions based upon age, gender, or other distinctions.   You must comply with any such restriction in order to receive Wisport points, except that you may elect to race a course which is longer than the one intended for your age/gender group.

However, if you race in more than one age group start, you will receive Wisport points for only one of these races unless the separate starts are listed as separate Wisport events.

If the race length options are not restricted by age or any other way, a rider may freely choose to race either distance.

All the distance options will appear on the website Schedule page as separate events.   The schedule page may change from time to time during the season with regard to these optional distances, and there may be distance options that do not appear in the printed Wisport Handbook.

12.   Menzel Series scoring: For rules governing the Jim Menzel Racing Series, see  Jim Menzel Racing Series Description and Rules.

Interested in hosting an event on the Wisport Calendar?

If you have a community or club in the Midwest that is interested in hosting a Wisport Road Race, Time Trial or Criterium please contact Wisport for an open date on the schedule.   Wisport would consider sites in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.   Being on the Wisport Calendar ensures you of a good turnout of participants, and may be the only promotion you choose to do.   We can supply your group with a written guide which can help you in the basic planning of your event, and includes requirements for sanctioning by Wisport.   Established races are welcome to apply too.

Our Twenty First Year.

2008 was the twentieth season of the WISPORT Cycling Series.   Wisport was created by attorney, Jim Menzel, of Stevens Point as an alternative to licensed racing, a nd, to his lasting credit, Wisport has always been a more casual, socially oriented form of racing ju st as he intended.   When Jim had to reduce his involvement, Darwin Vollrath of Greenwood, with the help and support of hi s family, took over the running of the organization for many years.   At the time of Darwin's untimely passing in 2005, Wisport was able to keep on track, due to the will ingness of Gale (Butch) Dushack to ably step in and take over the additional responsibilities.   This was literally just days before the beginning of the 2005 racing season.   Although Butch and also Gwen Torkelson had served as co-directors for 5 years with Dar, everyone curr ently enjoying the benefits of Wisport membership should know that this was not an easy transition. & nbsp; Thanks also go to the loyal support of membership, race organizers, and sponsors.

Many lasting friendships have been formed at Wisport bike races, and many families participate togeth er including spouses, as well as parents with their adult children.   Several young riders have started with Wisport and gone on to great success in more formal levels of competitive cycling.   Wisport also has a number of members who are able to compete at the highest levels of amateur cycling , but continue to participate in this unique organization whenever they can.   It is not hard to find members who will say that Wisport has changed their lives for the better.

Cycling, whether road, mountain, or city, has many forms and levels of commitment, but we like to bel ieve that Wisport is quite unique and is a very special organization to be part of.  The twentieth anniversary of Wisport is an occasion worthy of celebration.
